Norwegian cruise lines accidents aren’t as uncommon as you’d think. For a timeline of some of the most infamous Norwegian crashes and accidents over the last decade, keep reading. May 2008 In one of the most horrific Norwegian cruise line accidents, Mindy Jordan, a mother-of-two, fell overboard and was deemed lost at sea just hours after her ship left port in New York. According to Norwegian, Jordan was alone at the time of the fall and fell while trying to reach over to another balcony on the outside of the ship. However, Jordan’s family members suspected foul play. After interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage, the FBI deemed the fall an accident. Jan 2008 In the second of two Norwegian cruise lines accidents for the Norwegian Dream, the ship crashed into a shipping barge in Montevideo’s harbor. No one was injured and the cruise was only delayed by two days, but it was the second close-proximity crash for the Dream. Jan 2004 Norwegian’s Pride of America sank in Germany while it was being renovated. Investigators believe that storm water got in through holes in the ship’s hull, causing it to sink to the bottom of the harbor. Though not one of the Norwegian Cruise line’s accidents that affected passengers, the sinking cost Norwegian millions. May 2003 An explosion in the boiler room of the SS Norway killed eight crewmen and injured 10 more in the Port of Miami. The accident was caused by a buildup of steam that exploded after a weld on the steam drum burst releasing almost 20 tonnes of scalding hot, boiling water into the engine and boiler rooms of the ship. In May 2008, Norwegian cruise lines pleaded guilty to criminal charges of gross negligence. The cruise line was forced to pay a criminal fine after the accident was deemed a preventable crime that could have been avoided with proper maintenance. May 2001 In a series of Norwegian Cruise lines accidents, the Norwegian Sky’s autopilot system failed and turned the ship so fast that dozens of passengers were injured. 78 passengers suffered injuries ranging from bumps and bruises to broken bones due to the sudden turn that caused furniture to tip over and water to spill out of the swimming pools. Once the crew took over manual control of the ship, the ship righted itself. Aug 1999 In one of the most infamous Norwegian Cruise lines accidents, the Norwegian Dream crashed into a Thai cargo ship in the English Channel with 1700 passengers aboard. Both ships were using radar at the time and the accident was blamed on heavy traffic in the channel and an overburdened bridge officer aboard the Norwegian Dream. This was the first collision out of two Norwegian cruise lines accidents for the Norwegian Dream. See also: All Articles for Travel Cruise Adventures
