Travel Cruise Adventures :: Cruise Protection Cruise Protection:Cruise Protection: Choosing the Best Protection Insurance for Your Cruise
Custom Search
Cruise protection is more crucial than ever, thanks to current travel trends. For example, let’s say you’re a couple planning to fly to Miami to embark on a long-awaited cruise. You're flying on frequent-flyer award tickets, saving a few hundred dollars on air fare. However there's a major snowstorm the morning of your flight. You arrive at the airport late, and in Miami even later. Your cruise ship is going to sail without you. If you waived an air/sea combo package and booked your flight separately, the cruise line is under no obligation to fly you to the next port to catch your ship. Why Cruise Protection and Insurance Is Critical With vacationers increasingly eschewing cruise line air/sea packages, and instead opting to make their own air arrangements, cruise travel insurance is taking on an added significance. But, remember – not all cruise insurance is the same. Most major cruise lines offer their own forms of travel insurance, administered by mainstream underwriters. The cruise lines generally pay commissions of up to 10 percent to agents who sell the line's travel insurance. Many cruise-selling travel agencies, however, have also aligned themselves with mainstream insurance underwriters to offer cruise travel insurance covering everything from missed air connections to trip cancellations and interruptions, travel delays, travel accidents and baggage coverage. These policies generally pay agents much higher commissions, up to 35 percent. Typical Rates and Costs of Cruise Protection Rates vary according to coverage. For example, the travelers’ premium for trip-cancellation coverage ranges from $5.50 to $110 per person for coverage ranging from $100 to $2,000 per family member. For baggage coverage, the premium is between $10 and $275 per family member for coverage ranging from $500 to $2,000 per family member. Independent Insurance vs Cruise Line Insurance Cruise line policies, while covering the main areas of travel accidents, baggage loss and trip cancellation, are often not as comprehensive as independently purchased traveler’s insurance. A Sampling of Cruise-Line Insurance Carnival Cruise Lines: Carnival's Cruise Vacation Protection Plan offers coverage for trip cancellation, interruption and delay; baggage protection; medical expenses and assistance and emergency evacuation, at rates from $39 to $119 per person. Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian's Passenger and Baggage Protection Plan covers trip cancellation and interruption due to medical reasons, medical expenses, and baggage loss or delay. Rates range from $39 per person for a three-day cruise to $239 for a European cruise. Princess Cruises: The Love Boat Care program from Princess covers trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay, baggage, medical coverage, and emergency evacuation and assistance. The cruise protection policy also covers 75 percent of the cruise tariff in case of voluntary client cancellations, and the Love Boat Care Gold option increases coverage amounts significantly for an extra $50. Rates range from $89 to $389 per person, based on cruise fare. See also: All Articles for Travel Cruise Adventures
