A best cruise line rating is typically decided by a bunch of travel writers and editors, but not the annual rating run by Porthole Cruise Magazine.
Porthole actually uses real reader reviews to compile its system of rankings and ratings.
And this year, Holland America came out on top with 8 Readers’ Choice Awards for 2008. To learn which awards they won and about other lesser-known award-winners, keep reading.
Most Eco-Friendly Cruise Line
After implementing strict composting and recycling policies for all their ships, Holland America won over its passengers as the most eco-friendly cruise line. They recycle grey water, use organic products and minimize energy and water usage.
Holland America earned its best cruise line rating for eco-friendliness thanks also to their cleaner-burning propulsion technology that allows them to use less fuel and emit less gasses and waste into the air and water systems.
Currently, Holland America’s ships all exceed the international regulations surrounding the environmental management and operation of marine vessels. The company is working to improve the ratings and reduce their overall carbon footprint.
Best Private Island
Half Moon Cay is Holland America’s private, 50-acre island in the Bahamas.
It offers its cruisers a whole island to explore, beautiful beaches, cabanas, horseback riding, water sports, a nighttime bar-b-que, and sports and games for the whole family. It’s also one of the few private islands to offer passengers the option of dining on-shore.
This Half Moon Cay’s eighth year winning the prestigious best cruise line rating for Best Private Island.
The 50-acre resort is actually a secluded region of the 2,400 acre Little San Salvador Island. However, the Half Moon Cay area is isolated and totally private and staffed only by Holland America personnel.
Other Best Ratings for Holland America
Holland America also scored its Best Cruise Line rating thanks to its sweep of categories like Best Canada/New England itineraries, Best Alaska Itineraries Best Medical Facilities, Best Computer Facilities, Best Facilities for Passengers with Physical Challenges and Best South America Itineraries.
The line’s itinerary ratings are thanks to their long port stops and focus on ports of call that are off the beaten path.
Other Winning Cruise Lines – Windstar Cruises
Windstar Cruises, a relative newcomer to the cruise industry, picked up two awards for Most Romantic Cruise Line and the Best Tall Ship for Wind Surf.
Windstar operates three tall ships or luxury yachts that sail the tucked-away parts of the world that bigger cruise ships can’t reach. They’re known for tailored itineraries and incredible customer service.
Windstar ‘s ships carry just 100-320 passengers on each sailing and offer an impeccable experience embracing luxury and style. As a result, Windstar has also earned a Best Cruise Line rating from Conde Nast travelers.
